Dhoom 3: Review

Dhoom 3 is predictable, overstretched, cliched and malodorous of worst flicks of Abbas-Mustan.

The movie borrows its plot from its earlier installments: ACP Jai Dixit (Abhishek Bachchan) and Ali (Uday Chopra) are out there to nab the flamboyant bank robber, Saahir (Aamir Khan). At the site of robbery, the robber leaves a behind a message in Hindi. This prompts the Chicago Police to summon the two to unravel the mystery for them. Highly unconvincing the premise may sound but that’s just the beginning of the unpalatable.

The movie opens with Jackie Shroff’s narration about his life in 1990 attempting to salvage his circus group, a venture that also promises amazing magical tricks. The overstretched and boring sequence only leads to the obvious –Shroff dies and sets up a perfect trigger for his son Saahir to rob banks 25 years later (in the year 2015, I guess). Why he doesn’t do so earlier, is beyond comprehension.

The movie then offers elaborate but worn introductions to all its protagonists – Aamir Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Uday Chopra and Katrina Kaif. Each gets about a 10m sequence complete with profound degrees of unnaturalness.

The sole aim of this preliminary set-up is to drive home the unique capability of Saahir: During the post-robbery escape, Saahir, circumscribed by cops, pulls off a magic trick beyond a cogent explanation, i.e. he emerges out of an unrelated place thereby leaving all his pursuers (read, cops with guns in their hands) ridiculously flabbergasted and open-mouthed.

This kindles the hope of a good plot but ends up being a flash in the pan.

Dhoom 3 is a cacophonous potpourri of random events with full of grandiose yet deadpan dialogues. Its character development is flawed, detailing imprecise, background score loud, songs a discord; Further, its chase sequences go on forever and it lacks a single genuine guffaw in the three hours of infliction, and last but not the least, scores a cipher in the special effects section.

At some stage, one is perplexed as to what character Aamir Khan is playing: a clown, a circus artist or a magician?

A couple of days back, Abhishek Bachchan said, “Dhoom 3 is my film and I am the hero.” Well, with the version released a couple of days back, Aamir Khan is likely to refrain from a rebuke.

Katrina Kaif’s appearance is ceremonial, Uday Chopra amusements don’t find any echoes in the auditorium and Aamir Khan looks old and his performance is nowhere close to John Abraham in the first Dhoom.

So, is there anything in the movie to watch out for? Umm…may be a few picturesque locations and the related camera-work.

Aamir Khan prophesied that Dhoom 3 will be the first Bollywood movie to enter the 300-crores club. Well, it’s our money he will be riding on. I suggest picking up a few gifts on Christmas will be better utilization for your 300+ bucks. I insist you bunk the movie even if your tickets are already booked.
